This week, I've had the opportunity to introduce teachers and students to THREE new apps that serve as digital math tools. These free apps encourage open-ended exploration and mathematical thinking and can be used in the classroom or at home. Geoboard allows students to explore the properties of two-dimensional shapes. Number Frames is a great app for K-2 as students can select the size of their number frame and use it to solve addition and subtraction problems. Number Rack is a virtual abacus or rekenrek that students can use. One of my favorite activities to do with Number Rack is to cover up some of the beads with the "mystery box" tool and encourage students to find the missing part or addend. They can even write a math equation right on the screen! I would encourage parents and teachers to take advantage of these free resources!
